Christmas Home Tour 2017 Part 2

Hey everyone! Has the Holiday spirit filled your home yet? Is it all decked out for Christmas? We got some snow here in upstate New York this week and it truly looks like a winter wonderland. I was already SO filled with Christmas spirit and for me, it made this Christmas home that much brighter. 🙂

I shared the first part of our Classic Christmas Home Tour this week and today we’ll move into the kitchen and dining room. I went a bit out of my comfort zone with this one and added some gold touches for a bit of bling mixed in with the vintage vibe I was feeling in the rest of the house. Do you try to change it up each year or do you like to stick to traditional decor?

To the right of those windows pictured above is the kitchen…

Here is a bit of the bling I mentioned. I found the gold trim plates with the words Peace and Joy at Hobby Lobby on clearance last year and the white pitchers are a go to for every season. I kinda have an obsession, really. Or is a collection, I’m not sure. 🙂

I wanted some extra storage in the kitchen (mostly for craft stuff, haha) so we picked up this armoire on craigslist for $80. Can you believe it??  We made the white wooden tray on top out of some leftover MDF. You can see that project HERE.

A little more bling on the dining room table. We made this tray out of an old frame last year. You can see that project HERE.  I added some gold thrift store candlestick holders and a pitcher with greens and some gold bells. Simple, but pretty.

We don’t use the fireplace in the kitchen so I always try to fill it in with seasonal decor. Here I used a 2 tier tray that we made and added some holiday goodies.

Just above the stove is a recent project…

Classic Christmas Home Tour part 2 - Kitchen and Gingerbread bakery sign - farmhouse Christmas - Life on Kaydeross Creek

I made this Gingerbread sign from a leftover piece of birch plywood from our master bedroom closet project.  I stared with a coat of chalky white paint.

Then I used basic letter stencils and red craft paint and I added the vines in the corners in dark green. To finish it, I sanded the edges and used distress ink to give it a more aged look.

In the mudroom…

A simple Christmas tree farm printable I found on line in an inexpensive frame sits on top. The cute JOY pillow is from Joanne Fabrics and the wrapping paper I got at Michaels.

I love the way the chalkboard turned out. You can see that project HERE. It’s the perfect background for the wreath.

I love the pops of red throughout our Christmas decor.

I hope you enjoyed part 2 of this Classic Christmas Home Tour. Thank you so much for sharing some of your time with me today! I wish you and your family a wonderful, peace filled holiday season!

Classic Christmas Home Tour - DIY projects, vintage inspired - Life on Kaydeross Creek

Classic Christmas Home Tour 2017

Hey everyone! Welcome to our 2017 Christmas Home Tour – part 1!  Vintage pieces and red and black accents are the inspiration for our Christmas decor this year. Come on in!

Classic Christmas Home Tour - Foyer - & Great room Life on Kaydeross Creek

I love these mini Christmas trees! I bought the cute little wooden crate at Michaels on clearance. It was unfinished so I stained it with Minwax in Espresso.  I wrapped the base of the smaller tree in a sleeve from an old men’s plaid shirt and I picked up the antique lantern at a shop over the summer. It’s never too early to shop for Christmas.  One of my tips in 20 ways to decorate for Christmas on a budget.

The antique sled was a sweet find at the Brimfield Antiques Show a couple of years ago.

Classic Christmas Home Tour - Entry Table - Life on Kaydeross Creek

This antique typewriter was definitely inspiration for our Christmas decor.  I love the black and red together. The deer picture is simply a free printable I found on line and framed.

I made the Christmas tree sign last year from an old door. I used basic stencils and craft paint, nothing fancy. The plaid fabric around the mini tree is a gift bag from the Target Dollar Spot.

This sifter is from another Brimfield trip and the truck I picked up at HomeGoods a few years ago for my sons room. I borrow it for Christmas each year. 🙂

The mantel is always a layering process for me. I start with a main focal piece like the window.  (from my Christmas tour 2015) I purchased it at a garage sale, painted it black and used mirror effect spray paint (looking glass) on the glass.

Our new (old) wood box this year is an old grain cart. Hubby reinforced it to hold enough wood for a few days. We heat our house with the wood stove 24 hours a day so we can’t really hang anything from the mantel.

Classic Christmas Home Tour - Great Room Fireplace - Life on Kaydeross Creek

There’s no rhyme or reason to decorating our tree. It’s truly a family tradition where we open all of the boxes of ornaments and just start placing. No rules, all types of ornaments. Many of the ornaments are things we made or have collected over the years on vacations. There’s even one my husband made with his cute little picture in it from when he was 6. 🙂

I picked up the wrapping paper at Michaels. I love the brown paper mixed with the red and the deer print mixed with the polka dots.

These cute cookie cutter ornaments were one of the DIY’s I shared a couple of weeks ago in 3 Easy DIY Christmas decor projects.

I love the “rusty” patina.

I added some black and red to the entry with the skis and skates and books are always a decor go to for me.

I made this wreath from a basic green wreath I picked up on sale at Hobby Lobby. I found the scarf, which I cut lengthwise in half to use as the “ribbon”, and the skates at a thrift store for $4. I wired the skates on with floral wire and tucked some greenery and berries in.

I love looking at Pinterest and other blogs at neutral Christmas decor and find it so pretty and calm. For me, though, I just love the pops of red, especially with the black accents.

Thanks so much for stopping by today! I hope you enjoyed part one of our Classic Christmas Home Tour. Next time I’ll share the kitchen, dining room and mudroom all decked out. I hope you’ll check it out.

Christmas in the Kitchen - Farmhouse Christmas Home Tour - Life on Kaydeross Creek

Christmas Kitchen – Farmhouse Christmas Home Tour – Part 2

Last week I shared my Farmhouse Christmas Home Tour  to kick off the season with a lovely group of ladies as part of a Christmas blog hop. Today I’m sharing part 2 of my Christmas Home Tour, the Christmas kitchen, dining room and mudroom.  Truth be told, it’s a lot of work to put one of these bad boys together and was just too much to do all at once.

So since I love the red and black accents mixed with the greens, I carried over the same Adirondack, rustic touches mixed with lots of vintage, farmhouse pieces and DIY projects.

Ok so first thing first, it never looks like this or stays like this anyway. You know it. I know it. I mean we live here right??  In a few hours the counter will be covered with back backs, school papers, snack wrappers etc. so you know I feel your pain. In the mean time, let’s just enjoy the calm, shall we??  If you were here, we could sit and have coffee or whatever you like to sip 🙂

So, on with the tour. The white tray on the island above, which comes in handy for every season, was a DIY project a few months ago. You can see that here. The recipe below is from an old Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook. You know the one with the red and white checkered cover. It’s my favorite go-to when I actually feel like cooking. I simply printed it out on card stock and rubbed  it with some antiquing ink and a cotton rag. Free and easy.

Christmas Kitchen - Farmhouse Christmas Home Tour - Life on Kaydeross Creek

Trees, trees, everywhere!  I love my mini trees and I love them even more in cute little tins like this one…

christmas-kitchen-farmhouse-christmas-home-tour-life-on-kaydeross-creek

The pieces in the tray were either found at my go to antique store in my town, thrift store or at Brimfield. I added the bells to the candle just because they’re cute.

I love the pops of red everywhere!  To me, red is just warm and feels like Christmas.

Our dining room is all windows (no curtains needed here in the woods) so the only thing to decorate really is the table. I kept it simple this year with my favorite tray from American Farmhouse and, of course, reds and greens. The colors just pop off of the gray walls and the white snow outside. The cute little pillows are from Target.

The pitcher in the tray is from HomeGoods,  the candlestick holders are from Michaels and the antlers are from Target.

Last year my cute little tree was in the dining room but I switched things up this year and put it in the kitchen. The butcher block that it sits on is one of my oldest and very favorite pieces.

We just recently finished the mudroom and you can see that here. I love it all decked out for Christmas!

We picked this sled up in Brimfield last year. It weighs a ton and Poor hubby had to carry it like a mile back to the car. He’s a trooper 🙂 I can’t wait to go again in the Spring to see what unique things we can find!

I use the Pepsi tray below to corral different things throughout the year. The antique measuring cup that the little tree sits in I picked up at an antique store and the other tin is from Michaels.

Christmas Kitchen - Farmhouse Christmas Home Tour - Life on Kaydeross Creek

So some simple farmhouse and vintage finds mixed with red and green accents make for a cozy Christmas Kitchen space. Only a few more weeks until the big day to enjoy it all and probably only few hours left for me to enjoy the clean kitchen. Time to grab a cup of coffee and stare at the pretty lights in peace for awhile before I can’t see the counter again. Wishing you a wonderful, peaceful Christmas!!

If this is your first time visiting me on Life on Kaydeross Creek, Welcome!!  I’m so glad you’re here and hope you’ll find some inspiration for some new projects. You can get to know me a little by checking our our story here.

So let’s get started on this Farmhouse Christmas Home tour, shall we? I’ll start with our family room. It’s my favorite room in the house and also the center of our home. We live close to the Adirondacks so the style influences my decor throughout the year and there are touches of it everywhere including the faux deer heads and antlers. I love the mix of different plaids and the warmth of the red and black scattered with the greens of the mini trees and faux branches. I used some of the same elements from last year and you can see that tour here.

I always leave the task of choosing our tree to my husband because he has a great eye for it. He did a great job as always this year. 🙂  The ornaments are a mis-matched bunch of handmade pieces made by our kids and lovingly given to each of us as gifts or things we have collected on family vacations. I love that each one has meaning.

The shelf in the family room is something we made from 2 corbels and barn wood years ago. The ski’s I picked up in Brimfield. You can see one of those trips here.  The wreath is from Target but you can find one here. The deer head and smaller mini tree are from Michaels and the rest is garage sale or thrift store finds.

I made all of the gift tags this year from simple white tags, Chrismtas stamps/ink and scrapbook paper all from Michaels.  The matching ribbon and twine are from Micheals as well.

These tags are just made from small cut out sections of a piece of scrapbook paper outlined with a fine tip paint pen from Michaels.

The other tags are simple wooden slices my husband cut for me from small branches. I used the same fine tip paint pen to write Merry Christmas and then a larger tip gold paint pen for the dots.

The decorations on the mantel are a collection of things from thrift stores and fleamarkets. The screen and metal milk can I picked up in Brimfield this year. The Santa I got at the Salvation Army and the crock I have had for years. I love the way the silver, white and green play off of the blues and browns of the stone. I made the Believe sign from a an old piece of barnwood and a homemade stencil. I share that project soon.

This old tool caddy we found out in the barn at our old house over 20 years ago. What better way to display candles and greens for a Farmhouse Christmas Home tour? 🙂

A Rustic, Adirondack Christmas Home Tour 2015

Welcome to the complete Rustic, Adirondack Christmas Home tour on Kaydeross Creek. If you have followed along, you know that I was fortunate enough to have been invited to participate in the Bringing Holiday Home Tour  with some very talented bloggers last week. As each day was a different room in the house I thought I would tie it all together and share one big tour. Not to mention that since I have been cruising around to many of the other blogs out there, I have found some beautiful inspiration and have tweaked some of my things. Isn’t that what this is all about, inspiration??

Welcome to Christmas down at Life on Kaydeross Creek!

Here is our family room. The color scheme this year was inspired by the black/red and white pillow on the the white chair which I made from a man’s button down shirt which you can find here.

Great Room

The coffee table is one of my favorite pieces. I snagged it at a garage sale all beat up and broken for $5. You can see that project here. I picked up the apple ladder at an antique show in upstate New York and my hubby and I made the shelf with corbels I bought at the Brimfield Antiques Fair in Brimfield, MA.

Great Room Corner

The chair and couch are not my favorite but have been great with two small kiddos. I think Santa is bringing me a new sofa 🙂 The black mirror was a Ballard Designs knock off.

Our Dining Room is not your traditional space. There really is no walls space just window which we love. Lots of natural light looking out into the woods.  Not much to decorate, though other than the tablescape where I carried over the black, red and white from the other rooms.  I made the wooden disc place cards which you can find here.

Bringing Christmas Home Tour 2015 – Kitchen

Welcome to the Bringing Christmas Home tour day 4 – Kitchen Edition. I am so excited to be a part of the tour with these lovely and talented ladies and to share our Christmas Kitchen decor today. Please stop by their sites to check out their beautiful rooms, too. You’ll find their links below.

Bringing Christmas Home Tour 2015

Although I love decorating for Christmas, I try to keep the holiday decor simple in the kitchen because, let’s be honest, it doesn’t always look like this. As in most homes, the kitchen is the hub of our house and it can get crazy busy around here. That island is usually covered in mail, snacks, backpacks and homework just to name a few of the things that are thrown on there. So we keep the decor mixed in with other everyday things where possible. And, as usual, some of it is DIY or thrift store finds.

Christmas in the Kitchen, Christmas Home Tour 2015 - Life on Kaydeross Creek. Simple touches of red and green make it feel festive without feeling overdone.

Lots of little things in the kitchen make a big impact. I love the red, black and white!

Christmas in the Kitchen, Christmas Home Tour 2015 - Life on Kaydeross Creek. Simple touches of red and green make it feel festive without feeling overdone.

Instead of going overboard, I used the greens and pine cones where I could and red accents. I made this 1-9 sign out of an old left over piece of wood from another project. The basket and books are thrift store buys.

I also made this chalkboard out of an old picture I picked up for just $5 at a thrift store. The Advent calendar was a gift from my hubby years ago from Pottery Barn.

Christmas Dining Room and Simple Tablescape

Hey everyone and welcome to the Dining Room Edition of the Bringing Christmas Home Tour 2015. My  thought has always been that decorating doesn’t have to cost a fortune and it shouldn’t be terribly time consuming or stressful. This is the perfect example. I made these place cards from logs that hubby had cut when he was getting the firewood ready for the season. It fits right in with the rustic, woodland theme from the rest of the house and creates a relaxed Christmas Tablescape.

Christmas Dining Room Tour - Christmas Tablescape - Simple rustic touches - Life on Kaydeross Creek

It was super easy! I asked him to cut the ‘disks” for me so he did using the chop saw.  The plan was to make a combination place card and Christmas tree ornament. Once they were cut I drilled holes in them where I could use a piece of twine to hang them.

Rustic Place Cards Christmas Dining Room Tour - Simple rustic touches - Life on Kaydeross Creek

Then I painted them using chalkboard paint. I thought about writing with chalk but it wipes off too easy. I just like the color and tone of the chalkboard paint so I used it anyway.

So once they were dry I used a paint marker to write our names on them and Christmas 2015 on the back.

Rustic Place Setting - Christmas Tablescape - Christmas Dining Room Tour - Simple rustic touches - Life on Kaydeross Creek

No stress. For the place settings I just used sprigs of branches from the tree. I love the way the green, black and red carry through from the great room and kitchen. Don’t tell anyone, but I used paper napkins!  Less expensive, nothing to wash afterwards and not too stuffy.

For the center piece I used an old Pepsi crate (love the red letters) to hold some branches with red berries and white candles. Simple.

So there you have it.  Simple, inexpensive and easy to clean up when it’s time to eat. Gotta love it! Thanks for stopping by this part of the Christmas Home Tour Dining Room Edition at Life on Kaydeross Creek. I hope you enjoyed my Christmas Tablescape. 🙂

Bringing Christmas Home Tour 2015 – Family Room

Welcome to the Bringing Christmas Home tour 2015 and my family room! I LOVE decorating for Christmas up in the Northeast and I am so happy to be able to share it with you. It’s a full senses kind of thing; from the smell of fresh pine and cinnamon to the feel of the fuzzy throws on the couch. (Let’s not forget the freezing temperatures outside and the warmth of the fire place inside) It’s the taste of hot cocoa and Christmas cookies, the site of the beautifully decorated Christmas lights in our small town don’t forget the sound of the Christmas music that starts the day after Thanksgiving!

For my Christmas home tour I am thrilled to have teamed up with some very talented bloggers who have created some great spaces to share with you too. Each day we will be showing you beautiful and creative ways we’ve decked our halls. I hope you’ll join us!

Bringing Christmas Home Tour 2015

Today we’d love to share Christmas in the Living Room. I am beyond excited for this one because it is the first year we have had a completed fireplace and I couldn’t wait to decorate it. (in our house we call it the Great Room). I found my INSPIRATION early this year with a pillow I had made and from looking through the Ballard catalog. I tend to stay with the core pieces each year (which, up in the Northeast is lots of pine cones and greens) but add new and interesting touches. Of course, as a DIY nut, I also try to create some things myself.

This year I picked up the deer head at Marshall’s but decided to mount it to create a slightly bigger piece. I think it fits in better with the rustic feel.

I also made the red tree picture and the Joy sign. The pillows are from Marshall’s, TJ Maxx and Walmart.
