30 Farmhouse Furniture Makeovers

I’ve been obsessed with furniture flips lately, farmhouse furniture makeovers to be exact. The right piece of furniture can change the whole feel of a room. The color, the size and shape tell a story and can be inspiration for the rest of the decor in the space.

I happened to pick up this adorable little hutch this weekend on craigslist for just $70. I had been looking for something for our dining room for a long time and this will fit perfectly.  Sometimes you just have to wait until the right piece comes along…

It’s so cute, right?? I knew I wanted to paint it but was searching for inspiration on line and Pinterest, of course, did not disappoint. I found so many pieces that I loved I though I would share them with you. 🙂

Here are 30 of my favorite farmhouse furniture makeovers.

This buffet is stunning. The depth of the color on this piece and the aging with wax is beautiful. It’s so vibrant and the pulls are the icing on the cake.

I love the two tone of the wood on the drawers and blue paint in this dresser. It just so happens that I was recently given a dresser and I think I need to try this look.

What vision it must have taken to see this piece for what it could be. I’m sure a ton of work went into it to fix the overlay. The finished piece is so pretty and so grown up.

One of my favorite makeovers. This one was a labor of love but worth it. What farmhouse furniture makeovers would be complete without a bit of distressing and some farmhouse accessories.

Thrift Store Table Makeover & Color Wash Paint Technique

Hey everyone! I hope you’re all having a fantastic week! I’m busy working on a bunch of projects thanks to a very successful trip to my favorite thrift stores last weekend. Sometimes you just hit it right and find things you didn’t even know you needed. Has this ever happened to you? 🙂

This poor little kitchen table just seemed to speak to me. I took one look at it and I could see it all pretty again with a new coat of paint and fresh stain. So home it came and today, I’m sharing my thrift store table makeover with you.

Before…

Here she is before in a very dated and dull muted maple brown color. I know you’re not going to believe this but I got her for, drum roll please, $15.  I think it was because one of the legs was coming off but it just needed to have the bolts put in correctly and tightened and she was as good as new. I love the fluted legs and side rails.

The Plan: New stain for the top and paint for the legs.

After a good cleaning, I stripped the old stain off of the top. This was quite the process because that stain was like baked on there. I had to apply the stripper 3 times and scrape like crazy. Then I sanded it for what seemed like hours with the palm sander. (realistically, it was probably 20 minutes 🙂 ) I got all of the chips and scratches out too. Finally, it was clean and ready to stain with a more modern color.

The new stain I chose was a bit darker but more translucent. I mixed some Watco Danish Oil in Dark Walnut with Ipswich Pine and came up with something I liked. It’s a bit more fresh and I like the way you can see the wood grain through it. You can see the difference in color from the top and the legs.

Once it was dry, I gave it 3 coats of poly to make was it durable. I love the way the top turned out!!

The Paint Technique:

This was one of those projects I could see completed in my head while I was buying the piece. I saw the colors mixed together and knew it had to be green and blue. I started by giving the bottom a coat of homemade chalk paint in a mix of sage green and cobblestone from Country Chic Paint that I had used on the Antique Cabinet Makeover. What I got was this nice gray/green.

I wanted to “wash”  the blue on top of the green so it almost looked like a water color effect. To get the right blue I had in mind, I mixed navy blue from my son’s room with a bit of craft paint in Island Blue. It was exactly what I wanted.

I mixed a half a cup of warm water with a quarter cup of plaster of Paris and then mixed it into about 3/4 cup of paint. I wanted it to be a bit runny so I could wipe it off easily.

I brushed just a bit of the paint on and then wiped it off with a dry cotton cloth. I kept a damp cloth near me in case the paint got too heavy on the surface and I cold wipe it off. I also kept the green paint handy if I needed to touch it up.

After I gave the entire piece the blue “wash” I sanded down the edges of the corners on the legs where it would wear down if someone rubbed against it over time. I used 120 grit sandpaper to bring out the wood underneath.

Then I used my favorite Country Chic Paint Antiquing Wax over the legs and sides to give it a more aged look.

I love the way this table makeover came out! All of the layers of paint and stain give it such farmhouse character.

I’d love to see your projects if you try this paint technique!

Painted Furniture – Antique Hutch Makeover with Pure & Original Paint

I’m crazy excited to share this painted furniture project with you today as part of the Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest™ sponsored by Pure & Original Paint.  The theme for April is Pure Colors – Original Elegance. This project was a labor of love because of the piece I chose but it was sooo worth it! It was also something I had wanted to do for some time and this was the perfect opportunity and the perfect sponsor. Turns out, I loved their paint in all it’s chalky goodness!

This post contains affiliate links. I received free paint from Pure & Original in exchange for writing a review on the blog.  Although this post is sponsored, all opinions are 100% my own. See my full disclosure here.

So we were challenged to make over any piece of furniture. I chose this bad boy which I picked up a the Salvation Army for, wait for it, $35. I know, right?! I had to have it but had no idea what I would do with it, until now…

It was really beat up but I loved the size and the style of it and you could not beat that price. It took a really good cleaning and some spackle to fill in some of the big holes to get it ready to paint.

The one thing I didn’t do to get this piece ready to paint was sand it or prime it first. The paint went on and covered so well without it. My plan was to layer the colors and then antique the piece so that the lighter color would show through the darker just a bit along with bits of the original wood. I started out with a color called Silverplate as the first coat.  It was much lighter than it looks here and almost had a blue-ish tone.

Pure & Original Paint

The second color was the darker color, which was called Silver Like. It was very gray and really pretty!

pure-original_SilverLike-150x150

I used about 1.75 quarts to cover this giant piece so the paint went pretty far. The results was a wonderful smooth chalky finish. If you were painting something that you wanted to look a bit more elegant this paint would work great too but for my purpose, aging the piece, it was perfect. After it had dried for a couple of days, I went around the edges with some 120 sandpaper. The lighter color came through here and there and with a little harder pressure on the sandpaper the wood finally came through. The result on this antique hutch makeover is a gorgeous, chippy, rustic goodness and I love it!

I love that there are so many different ways to style it. I love mixing quirky antique pieces like the old camera and binoculars with new pieces like the clock and my go to favorite, white pitchers. I can’t wait to decorate it for each season and Christmas!

Although I have had some of these things for some time, you can shop this look below with similar items I’ve found…

I would definitely use this paint again. It has a beautiful finish and the colors are really pretty. My husband likes the colors I used so much that we may end up painting the mudroom the darker color. In addition, the company was great to work with. They were so professional and organized from the ordering process to follow up and delivery.

It’s amazing the character painted furniture adds to a space. If you have a piece of furniture you are not sure what to do with, why not give it a makeover and do something outside your comfort zone.  If you’d like to check out the Pure and Original Paint website you can go to https://www.pureoriginalpaint.com/usa/?ref=123.  (affiliate link – for more information please see my disclosure policy)
