Farmhouse Centerpiece – Upcycle Challenge
I’m back today with another budget friendly project to share with you using what else but a thrift store find to create a farmhouse centerpiece. I’ve paired up with a group of talented ladies to bring you a monthly Thrift Store Decor Upcycle Challenge. Each month we will create a new home decor piece from an item(s) we’ve found at a thrift store, yard sale, resale shop etc. There is no budget or specific theme so we are free to let our creativity run wild! Today’s project is an upcycled farmhouse centerpiece.

I love changing out the display on my kitchen table every once in awhile, especially for each season. For summer I chose to create something new using this box I picked up at a yard sale for $4. It will become my new farmhouse centerpiece.

What you will need:
- A wooden box (any size to fit on your table)
- chalk paint
- craft paint
- number stencils
- distress ink
- cotton rag
- handles
I’d seen this cute idea on Pinterest where someone had used a box that they had built. I’m already ahead of the game here with my sweet find. I decided to paint it white using chalk paint. I love the softness it gives to a piece. It took 2 coats but covered fairly well…
It was way too stark for me so I broke out the palm sander and gave it a good sanding around the edges and here and there but it still seemed to be missing something. I added a little personality with the number stencils and bit more character with some distress ink.
I also added some handles to the ends to make it easy to move off of the table. I had picked up a bag of these gold handles at my favorite thrift store for $1.
I spray painted them black and here is how they look..
Add some hydrangeas in mason jars and viola, a pretty farmhouse centerpiece…
So a few coats of paint, some stencils and a little distress ink takes it from this…

I love an easy, inexpensive project! The nice part is you could do this with any shape box, paint it any color and use it for any season. I might try greens and pine cones at Christmas. Stay tuned!

Thanks, Maureen! I’m so lucky to get the hydrangeas from my neighbor’s yard. He once told me that he didn’t really know what they were and he was thinking about taking them out. I said NO, please don’t do that! Luckily, he listened 🙂
