In small kitchens, you may have to get a little more creative. If you want to keep your most used chopping boards out of sight, and you have enough cabinet space, save counter space by placing them in a lower cabinet with the cookie sheets. This way, you can just display your pretty boards.

Where I find cutting boards:

Marshalls, Walmart, Target or Amazon are great places to find reasonably priced cutting boards.

Thrift stores or flea markets are a great place to find wood boards. I generally don’t use these for food but once cleaned up they look beautiful. I sand the board a bit to smooth out the deep grooves and then apply a stain to bring out the beautiful wood.

If you do plan on using them for food, you’ll need to give it a good cleaning. If it has deep groves, sand it first as above and then clean them well with a hot water and vinegar 50/50 mix. For a deeper clean, sprinkle baking soda on the surface, spritz with watered-down vinegar and scrub with a brush. Rinse thoroughly and stand upright for drying.

Once it is completely dry, apply a food grade mineral oil to the board to condition it and keep it from drying out.

Pro tip: Use a lemon juice and baking soda mixture to remove smells from old boards.
