As with any project, you need to have a plan before you can get started.

  • Plan your furniture layout
  • Make a list of what you want to keep
  • What you’ll part with
  • What you are willing to DIY
  • What you would like to buy

DIY deck decorating ideas

1. Fresh Coat of Paint or Stain on Deck Floor

Sweat equity! Refresh weather-worn deck boards with a bright new stain or paint. A new color can lift the entire space in just one weekend—the best thing you can do to revive your wooden decks.

We did this last summer and changed to a lighter color it made such a big difference. Just touching up? Sample-size cans are surprisingly affordable, making this easy DIY refresh a good option for any budget.

If you have a wooden deck, be sure to prep the surface first by power washing it, sanding, sweeping and repairing any unsteady boards.

2. Create a Seating Area for Gathering & Conversation

Create a space for gathering with an intentional seating area. Determine how many people you would like to seat and draw out a layout. (Nothing fancy, this can be as simple as a piece of paper and pencil) Then, take measurements to know what type of pieces will fit best to make the most of your space.

If you already have pieces you are keeping, clean them well and spray paint if needed. I have had the same wrought iron table and chairs for 20 years and each year I touch them up  a bit with Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint. I love it!
