Cozy Fall Home Tour – Fall Decor Tips
How to use natural elements and vintage pieces to give your home a warm and welcoming feeling in this cozy fall home tour.
Our vintage and farmhouse Fall decor 2020 looks a bit different than the Fall tours in years past. When it comes to decorating for everyday or for a season, I try to have some idea of what direction I’d like to go in regarding a color story and that ususally starts with an inspiration piece or a “jumping off point”. This helps keep me focused and creates a cohesive look. It could be a plaid blanket or a throw pillow or a piece of art.
For part of our Fall decor this year, it turned out to be a thrifted tray I picked up on our vacation in Cape Cod this summer. It’s a bit more shabby chic than I usually like and a step outside my comfort zone but I really like the combination of yellow, plum and green. I know, right?!? Not my usual go-to burnt orange and brown (but wait, that makes an appearance, too).
Once I decided to go in that direction, things kind of fell into place. I started pulling together accessories and other items I have in these colors and realized I had these beautiful purplish, or plum, green and white dried limelight hydrangeas I saved from last year.
They are a perfect match to the colors in the flowers on my tray. I mixed them in with some simple Golden Rod which we have all over our yard and I love because it’s FREE! Talk about cheap fall decor.
TIP: Gather all the pieces of your color story together to save time and money.
If you choose a color story but don’t already have the colors to go with it, you’ll end up spending money you may not want to or you’ll have to switch gears once you’ve started. If you have at least a few things on hand in those colors and can mix in your neutral everyday pieces, you can buy a few key pieces and still not break the bank.
The Golden Rod add a nice soft yellow and even some texture to the space.
Here it is in the wall basket in the entryway with some floral pieces I picked up in the Target Dollar Spot.

I really like the way the entryway feels. It’s so bright and airy with the white trim and the yellow/gray accents pop. The blanket and pumpkin add warmth and texture as well as the market bag and the muted color tones in the crock and the antique stool.

I pulled the yellow/plum colors in other ways such as the Pepsi crate on the dresser and in the pillows on the sofa…
…as well as in the candles and the thrift store picture. I love the warmth of the amber bottles and gold frame, all thrift store finds.
Tip: Look to your everyday decor like the gold candlestick holders for seasonal decor for Fall and Christmas.
More hydrangeas bring in the plum/wine color along with the pillows.
TIP: Use FREE Printables and thrifted frames in your decor.
The little bird picture is a free printable I got on Pinterest where can find so many different types of pictures. They are such an easy Fall DIY project when you put them in a pretty frame.
Another vintage Fall decorating idea is to mix in old books, which seam to go with everyday and every season. They are a great way to add color and height to any vignette. The little white pumpkin balances out the color.

For our Fall farmhouse mantel decor, I used part of an old whitewashed door and a black chalkboard with a gold frame as the backdrop for the gold candlestick holders, yellow candles and hydrangeas. You can see more of those chalkboards in our Christmas home tour from last year.

Here’s a peak into the other rooms where I used more burnt orange. I’ll share that in the next post.
So, ironically, I didn’t end up actually using the tray in any of the vignettes! It was a great start, though, for Fall inspiration and to a lovely color combination. I’m really happy I took a chance and tried something new!
