DIY Christmas Garland
This DIY Christmas garland tutorial is super easy and inexpensive! It’s made with vintage bingo cards but can also be made with old Christmas cards or cardstock.
I love thrift stores! Thrift stores are my favorite! – like my “Elf” reference? There’s a thrift store near me similar to a Habitat for Humanity store where I find the best stuff. I’ve picked up some beautiful dishes for like 10 cents each, crocks, frames, you name it. One day after digging through some boxes (never underestimate the box at the bottom :)) I found this vintage Bingo set. Can I get a woot woot?!?
If you like rustic farmhouse, bingo cards are something fun to decorate with. They add a cool vintage vibe and a bit of fun to your space. I really like this set because the cards have a warn, antique color which goes well with my decor.
Since I’ve been decorating for Christmas, thought I could incorporate these into our Christmas decorations somehow. I have them placed here and there but then thought how cute would they be if I strung them together? Talk about easy DIY garland ideas!
When it comes to DIY Christmas decorations, this is literally the easiest project and requires very few craft supplies. It took me probably 15 minutes to make it.
Here’s what you need to make a simple DIY garland with paper:
- Bingo cards, old Christmas cards or cardstock
- Black or dark green scrapbook paper
- cookie cutter in the shape you want (I chose a tree) or you could use a stamp
- scissors
- embellishments – I chose Santa gift tags
- whole punch
- twine
- distress ink – optional
- glue stick
Steps to make a simple DIY Christmas garland:
- Measure out your twine the length you think you want, hold it up to the space if you are making this DIY garland for mantel or stairs. Once you have cut it – cut it extra long just in case – lay the twine out all the way and then lay cards out on top of the twine to see how many cards you will need.
- Grab all the cards and hole punch and punch two holes at the top of the card in the center. I used the “N” in Bingo as the middle and punched the holes on either side:
3. Now it’s time to add the embellishments to the cards. Take your cookie cutter, trace out the shape on the scrapbook paper and cut them out or use your stamp if you have one.

4. Use the glue stick to adhere the scrapbook paper shapes to the bingo cards.
5. For every other card, I did a different embellishment. I used the glue stick to adhere the Santa gift tags to some of the cards as well. The Santa tags were a bit bright so I used my antique ink to age them a little bit by rubbing a little on them with a cotton rag.
You can see here where they look a bit more vintage.
6. Start stringing the cards up on the twine by putting it through from the back and then back through to the back from the front. This will give you just a small piece on the front. There you have it, your DIY Christmas garland.
I love it against the black of the chalkboard and mixed with the greens and red berries.
Such a simple DIY Christmas garland and you can do it in no time. It adds such a unique touch to our Christmas decor.
