Family Room Makeover Before & After

A dramatic family room makeover inspired by soft colors and a mix of old and new.

I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am to share this family room makeover with you. Since we’ve been in our house for 10 years, “a long time coming” is an understatement. 🙂  It’s been such a hodge podge of everything that had no other place in our house. There was no real inspiration until now and I cant wait until you see this transformation!

BEFORE #1:

Ok, so wow, those sofas, I know. I bought them 16 years ago when floral was in.  Not much to look at but SUPER comfortable. After two toddlers, countless snacks, cups of coffee, movie nights etc. in the end, the bigger one was just, well, embarrassing!

So to get us through temporarily, I gave it bit of a makeover a couple of years ago for less than $100.

Better, am I right? Very temporary because those are the same sofas but I just used tablecloths for slipcovers. Still looking at that giant TV (also about 14 years old) until we could get a new one but at least the furniture and accessories were more cohesive.

So how do you create a cozy , bright, cohesive space that flows?  You find a piece that inspires and speaks to you and go from there…

AFTER, Makeover #2:

Finally!! Winner winner, chicken dinner!!

So much brighter, light and airy.

So this family room makeover started with us choosing a sofa. As much as I love the way a white sofa looks, I just couldn’t do it. I know they have washable slipcovers but I honestly didn’t want to be ripping one of those off and washing it every 5 minutes. We have our coffee on this sofa every morning while watching the news, not to mention movie nights and I know something is going to happen one of these days.

I. just. can’t.

We opted for this pretty dark, moody gray sofa instead. It’s 101 inches long and we can all sit on it together for a movie. It’s super comfy! It has a washable slip cover just in case.

The sofa came with 4 pillows and we chose this fabric which became the inspiration for the whole room. The paisley is a bit out of my norm but I really like the softness and antique feel of it.

l pulled the wall color out of the paisley fabric and went with Benjamin Moore Titanium which is a pretty light gray. I painted on a weekend that the boys were away. Coffee, coffee, coffee…

You can barely see it but there is a hint of green in the paisley.  I pulled that little bit of green out and added some accessories.

The chairs, which are from Wayfair,  are a creamy oatmeal. They were a steal and I sprung for the protection on them which literally covers anything that can happen and they’ll replace them. They’re super pretty and I love them!

To keep this family room makeover on budget, I painted the cabinet in the corner white. It broke my heart because I adored it in the original gray I had painted it which just was too much gray in the room. (you can see that makeover here)

I added soft greens, browns and white along with these super simple curtains to keep it light.

I picked up this cute little wash stand on Craigslist for $20. I painted it white, too and did my new favorite matte finish on top to match the finish on the new TV stand. I also gave the coffee table a makeover to match. We picked that up at a flea market for $10 about 20 years ago.

I love this little corner. The ladder was a Brimfield find and the cute signs are from Hobby Lobby.

Kevin actually made me this nesting box shelf out of rough saw pine.  It probably cost us less than $20.

  1. Colleen,

Looks great! Trying to see if your new sofa has piping on it? Sometimes when getting a darker sofa, just having the pop of piping on it makes all the difference. But you pulled everything together and it looks fabulous:)

  2. Wow, what a nice change! I love all of your “found” pieces and the painted corner shelf and coffee table; Kevin (hubs?) did a wonderful job on the cubby piece; what a wonderful way to display treasures. Have to say I love those Wayfair chairs and the blue TV cabinet is gorgeous. Well done!
