What to Have in Your Decorator Toolkit

What to have on hand in your toolkit to make decorating quicker and easier.

As a blogger I change things up around my house pretty often, not only so I can share new ideas with you, but I get bored quickly and just like moving things around. Most of the projects I do require small tools and gadgets to make decorating easier. However, I found myself running back and forth to the kitchen where I kept all of my stuff in bins and then, while I was using these things, I would pile them on an end table or put them down somewhere random and not remember where I put them. It was frustrating and time consuming.

What I needed was something to corral all of my stuff in one place so when Mollie Ollie reached out to me asking if I wanted to try their Mimmo Caddy , I said I have the perfect way to use it!

It’s the perfect size for small projects and simple tools for decorating. Here are the things I store in my tote…

Small tools and gadgets to have in your decorating toolkit:

  1. Scissors – these come in handy for cutting fabric, twine, pictures to fit in frames etc. or even loose threads on pillows and blankets.
  2. Pencils – pencils (with erasers) for obvious reasons but mostly for marking on the wall where I want to hang a picture.

3. Floral wire – floral wire and wire cutters can be used for making wreaths or for grouping bunches of flowers together in a vase or for fastening anything together really.

4. Wire cutters – great for cutting apart bunches of faux flowers or picture hanger wire.

5. Twine – Twine comes in handy for so many things. I love to use it as an embellishment on picture frames, to hang small wreaths, or wrapped  around pitchers with a key hanging down.

6. Chair pads – These are great for the bottom of chair legs so they don’t scratch the floor but I also use them on anything wood that sits on a shelf or table such as trays.

7. Velcro pads – great for keeping pictures straight.

8. Command strips – to hang lightweight pictures without leaving holes in the wall.

9. Exacto knife – great for cutting paper for crafts or the backs of art.

10. Painters tape and regular tape – I use the painters tape to measure the distance between the two hooks on the back of the picture so it’s easy to hang. I also use either that or regular tape folded over (double sided) to stick down pictures in a frame or to stop a picture from moving on the wall.

11. Small cotton rag and Goo Gone – great for removing any price tags on things, especially glass in frames, or anything sticky.

12. Small level – a small torpedo level is great for making sure pictures or shelves are level when you are hanging them.

13. Stapler – great for stapling fabric to wood,

14. Glue gun and glue sticks – I use these for lots of projects, adding embellishments to decor or for fixing loose bindings on books.

15. Flat head and phillips head screwdriver – great for taking the backs off of frames, removing hardware from furniture, or hanging heavier pictures.

16. Rubber bands – These work well for bunching faux flowers together to fit in a pitcher or vase.

17. Hammer and small screws and nails – to hang heavier pictures

18. Tape measure

19. Sandpaper – always great in the decorators toolkit in case there is a splinter on something or I want to distress a sign or picture frame.

20. Note pad – As I’m decorating, I always get new ideas on a blog post, a project or I remember something I need to get for a project. I try to write it down as soon as possible or I’ll never remember. 🙂

These are the things I use most often in simple decorating around the house from one season to the next and it all fits in the caddy. The nice part about the Mollie Ollie Mimmo Cady is that it is super sturdy so it holds it’s shape and if something spills, it cleans up easily.  It would be great for arts and crafts, too.

For larger projects, like furniture flips, hanging an entire gallery wall, painting a room or hanging wainscoting for example, there is another list of tools needed but I’ll save that for another time.

So just some tools to make decorating a bit easier and having them all in one place will save time in the long run. What are some of your favorite tools you use when you’re decorating?

Happy DIY’ing!
