DIY Farmhouse Wall Decor – Fixer Upper Style

Hi Friends! Have you ever seen something in a magazine or on a TV show that you just knew you had to have? You thought to yourself, “OMG, I love that!” It was totally you and you had to have it. So, this happened to me (and, I’m guessing, some of you) on a weekly basis as I was watching Fixer Upper. I may be slightly obsessed which is where today’s project comes in. I’m sharing some unique DIY wall decor.

The Inspiration.

I love all of Joanna’s stuff but especially the cool wall decor she uses. I love to try to make my own pieces like that like our rustic shutter project or metal wall decor. Today I am sharing something a little bit out of the ordinary so I hope you’ll stick with me on this one. 🙂 It started out like this…

Brimfield finds 2018 - canvas army bag - Life on Kaydeross Creek

So on one of the shows last year, she had what looked like a large canvas tote bag layered in another bag hanging above a fire place.

At least that’s how I remembered it.

I know it sounds weird, but it was just so different and I really liked the texture and color of the whole thing.

It just so happens I found this canvas army bag at Brimfield this year for just $10. I love the shape and the faded army green color.  Do you see where I’m going with this??

The Process.

Now, to find something to hang it on.  I had to go with a wooden background of course. We picked up two of these tongue and groove boards from Home Depot. It’s only 3/4 of an inch thick and not very heavy so perfect to hang on the wall.

Actually, it’s made for wood wall treatments so it’s easy to put together and they were only about $13 a board.

In order to figure out how large the background should be, I laid the bag out and measured around it . I wanted to make sure there was enough room to have an equal area around the edges of it so it looked balanced or centered.

Once I got the measurements, we were ready to cut the pieces with the chop saw. First we cut the “tongue” (flat part that sticks out and goes into the groove of another board) off of one of the boards with the table saw. That way we had a solid, straight edge to work with.

Then we cut 5 equal length boards.

We used wood glue to to help keep it all together.

We attached thin pieces of wood with small brad nails with the nail gun across the back of each piece to hold them together.

Hubby used the clamps for a little while to hold it together while the glue dried.

Once it was dry, he attached “D”ring hangers to the back.

At this point I realized it needed a frame so I picked up another piece of the wood at Home Depot. In order to get the most out of the board and just add a bit of a border (about 2 inches), we ripped (cut) the board in half lengthwise.

Then we cut the lengths we needed and mitered (cut at a 45 degree angle) the pieces so it would fit together like a picture frame. Crazy blogger error, I forgot to take pictures. Here’s what the corners look like completed.

I laid the finished wooden background out on the table and centered the bag near the bottom. I used tiny nails to attached it to the wood leaving an opening at the top of the bag.

The Result.

We hung it on the wall and the bag opened more than I wanted it to so I another nail. Once it was secure, I added the flowers to finish off the look of this DIY wall decor. Gotta love some DIY Farmhouse decor on a budget!

  1. Shirley here once again. Ever since the day I saw this post I have been looking and looking for just the right sack to do something similar. It’s crazy how I haven’t even come close to finding what I’m looking for but it will come to me one day…lol.

    1. Hi Shirley! It’s hard when you have something specific in mind! Try looking at flea markets, thrift stores or maybe even an army/navy store. Happy hunting! 🙂

  2. Personally, I totally love it! I can see where you may have thought it was one bag tucked in another. That’s the first impression I got out of it too. Then with a closer inspection saw that it was a map. Whatever! 🙃 I don’t get to watch fixer upper or any of those shows anymore because first, I’m too busy and second we did away with cable and we couldn’t be happier about the savings! You and I both have an eye for the unusual but it’s our taste and I love it! Great project!
