Easy DIY Wall Decor – Thrift Store Thursday
How to create one of a kind, easy DIY wall decor for your home from thrift store art.
One of my favorite things to find at thrift stores/flea markets is something fun to hang on our walls. You can find the coolest stuff to make something totally your own and create unique wall decor. I happened to find this cute little framed picture one day for $2. I didn’t really like the picture itself but I’m really into gold lately and the frame and matte with gold trim were really pretty. It would be great if I could change the picture, so I did.
What you need to make unique DIY wall decor:
- An X-acto or detail knife
- A free printable or other picture
- Tape
- Gold craft paint
- Small paint brush

I started by flipping it over to the back.
The back was covered with paper so I cut that open with my detail knife to get to the picture inside.
The cardboard backer on the inside is held down with staples so I used a flat head screwdriver and pliers to pry those out where they were coming out anyway.
I left the ones that were in completely and bent them over so I would have something left to hold down the back after I put the new picture in.
On to the picture. I was surprised to find the the picture was actually glued to the cardboard and the matte itself. I had to carefully pull them apart without ruining the matte.

I used the detail knife to cut around the matte to get the remaining paper off it.
Once that was done, this cheap DIY wall decor was coming together with a free printable. Simply go to Pinterest and search “free spring printables” or be more specific and use “free spring daisy printable” or “vintage” or “Easter” etc. until you find what you’re looking for to match your other decor.
I found a pretty daisy print with a vintage vibe. I’m really liking the more muted colors for Spring this year. I’ll share more later on that.
I printed this one on regular paper instead of cardstock, only because I forgot to change the paper. Oops. It works fine either way. I simply taped it to the back of the matte.
I placed the cardboard back on and used a flat head screwdriver to gently push the staples back down to hold it in place.
That’s it, super simple farmhouse DIY wall decor or any style really. That’s the beauty of this, you can tailor it to any style or season. I’ll be able to use it for Fall and Christmas decor as well.
I also gave the frame a little makeover with a more subtle gold color with some gold craft paint and it feels a bit more vintage now.
I love the way the green and yellow in the picture tie in with the green leaves in the flowers and the books and the candles. Super pretty and so simple for an early spring vignette.
This was definitely one of my favorite DIY wall art projects. It probably only took me 20 minutes to make it. It actually took longer to pick out the printable than to finish the project. 🙂
