How to Make DIY Wood Slice ornaments

How to create a rustic, neutral Christmas tree with black, white and gray and easy DIY wood slice ornaments!  Plus so much holiday inspiration with Christmas tree decorating ideas from some amazing bloggers!

Hi Friends! I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you’re ready for some Christmas decorating inspiration! I’ve teamed up with 39 other bloggers to bring you their Christmas trees decor ideas. I’m sharing our neutral Christmas tree with black, white and easy DIY wood slice ornaments.  You can check out the other bloggers, too, below. 🙂

So I always say inspiration can come from anywhere. The inspo for this tree came from these pretty bells I picked up at a cute little shop in my area and this really pretty, neutral wrapping paper I found at Walmart.

I love the black, white and silver together and the rustic, vintage vibe.  I decided to go all neutral in this room which is a bit out of my comfort zone. In order to do that, you definitely need some texture to make it interesting. That’s where the twine, greens and cute little DIY wood slice Christmas ornaments come in.

They are super easy to make and go perfectly with the black and white. Here’s how to make them…

What you’ll need…

I started with a small branch that had fallen in our yard. It was just right for a smaller ornament,  about 2 inches in diameter but was way to long to manage. We cut it down to a size that would fit in the chop saw. If you don’t have a chop saw, you can skip this and purchase wood slices at Michaels or Amazon.

We made each slice about 1/4 of an inch thick.

That little branch gave us quite a few slices to play with.

I used a drill with a 5/32 drill bit to cut a hole for the ribbon or twine. I first placed a piece of scrap wood under it so I didn’t cut into the counter.

As you can see, I wore my good sweatshirt for this. Hahaha.

To go with the black and white, I used simple stamps with black ink. It was the perfect match for the soft white of the wood and the mix of black and white in the bark. I used simple twine to hang them but you could also use a thin ribbon.

I used small silver hooks to hang some of them because if you hang them with just the twine on the branches you can’t see the cute little stamp because it hangs sideways.

There are so many options for creating these ornaments depending on how much you want to take on. Paint them anyway you’d like, burn a picture in them with a wood burning tool, place a sticker on one and paint over it then peal off the sticker to reveal the wood. You could also use paint pens to draw on them or apply glue and use glitter (at your own risk, haha).

To go with the black and white theme, I also made these super easy salt dough ornaments and these DIY snow globes. I’ll be sharing those other projects soon so stay tuned!

I hope you’re inspired to make your own DIY wood slice ornaments. What type of tree do you usually get? Are you a real or faux tree person?
