Fall 2026 Kitchen & Dining Room Decor: Layering Color, Texture, and Warmth

For these spaces, I decided to take a different approach in what I’m sharing with you. I recently received some feedback that you wanted to see more styling tips and ideas so I thought I would share my thought process behind these fall vignettes I created in the kitchen and dining room. My secret is simple, do what you love and repeat.

1. Pick a jumping off point

Start with a basic idea and build on that. Going into each season, I usually have a picture in my mind of what I want to do. I literally find inspiration in the weirdest places; colors on my morning walk, a TV commercial for a random product, magazines, a Target ad or a simple print. Pay attention to the everyday things and you never know what will inspire you.

This is from a walk down my driveway. Notice the orange against the beautiful blue sky.

How fall colors in the trees can inspire you for fall decoraring

For the fall decor in the kitchen and dining room, my inspiration was the blue and orange, which is a bit different than the living room and family room, which you can see here. The key to transitioning from room to room is a common ground and in this case it’s the beautiful color in the hydrangeas.

I knew I wanted to keep the blue and white dishes I used for summer because, although I have thrifted some of them, most of them are family heirlooms and I have been feeling very nostalgic lately. (you will see this in the upcoming Christmas season 😊)

I shared a post on decorating with meaning and you can find that here.

I mixed in the orangey pink/rose colored hydrangeas and repeated the colors throughout. They add vibrant color and texture to the spaces.

The thing is, not everything for each season has to be about the traditional seasonal elements. You can celebrate the season without using all pumpkins and Halloween decorations if that’s what you like. Put your own spin on it and make it your own.

See how I repeated the blue and white in the dishes and the orange with the bittersweet. Then you add in different heights, layers back and forth and the warmth with the wood and amber bottles.

2. Use what you have, but updated

Whether it’s your everyday dishes (why I recommend white dishes), things you have in your yard or things you pull from other spaces. Even if it seems weird, don’t be afraid to use things in different ways, update them with paint or simply add ribbon. Find ways to make the everyday extraordinary.

I’m not saying don’t buy anything new, especially if it’s something you love and it goes with the things you already have. I started out thrifting to save money but now it’s more about finding that really cool thing that makes my spaces unique.

The bittersweet brings instant seasonal color with vibrant orange berries and offers an organic, wild-foraged look that feels timeless. Some would say it looks like weeds but that’s what I love about it. It’s got great texture and it’s a bit messy.

I simply tucked some stems into white ironstone pitchers and crocks and it looks so pretty with the blue dishes.

The trick with color is repetition. This goes for any room you’re decorating.

3. Warm It Up with Rich Wood Tones

I always like to add wood elements to my vignettes because it’s such a great way to add warmth. This is especially true against the gray and white stone countertops in our kitchen. I really feel like this warmth is what makes it feel “homey”.

Ways to add wood:

  • Antique, vintage and thrifted cutting boards.

Again it’s all about the layering and repetition of color.

Here I used this old wood toolbox as a “vase”.  I love the character it adds. These are the things that make the spaces you create your own.  It doesn’t matter if someone else “gets it”. They don’t have to.

  • Wooden scoops and rolling pins.
  • Dough bowls and serving pieces.
  • Vintage boxes and trays.

The warmth of wood instantly makes a space feel inviting and adds depth and prevents seasonal decor from feeling flat. I keep my tea bags in that cute little jar. 😊

5. Create Layers with Collected Kitchen Displays

When I’m styling a Fall Hutch or Cabinet or vignette (or for any season really), I have a decorating formula. Start by adding in the biggest pieces that will be the base first. Layer in height and contrast and then finish with the smaller, natural elements and collected accessories.

When it comes to decorating the kitchen, remember to keep It functional. Focus on pieces that can stay out throughout the season and still be practical for everyday living and entertaining.

This corner is large enough where I can still use the counter for everyday things. I love the way the basket tray grounds the space and fills in what could be a cold view.

I repeated the baskets throughout as well as the orange and colors from the hydrangeas.

Fall decorating doesn’t have to be complicated. By adding some seasonal color, layering texture with florals and warmth with natural wood tones, I feel like I created a space to celebrate fall without going overboard and still keeping functional.

The beauty is in the simplicity of the layers. If you decorate with things that have meaning to you and things that you love, everything will come together. It turns out that I love weeds in my dining room. 🙂

Happy decorating (your way)!

Colleen
